Albany Library
The adaptive re-use of this existing 41,000 square foot office building into the City of Albany’s main library included programming, interior design, and interior and exterior improvements. This comprehensive renovation was completed for a modest $80 per square foot.
The exterior design unifies the original building and two additions through a paint/color concept integrating the town’s history as an agricultural center. A new illuminated entry canopy serves as a way finding device for library visitors. Interior improvements, organized around a double height central lobby and stair, provide a mix of places for patrons to socialize, read, access computers, and interact with Library staff. Additional spaces include a “Grab-n-Go” section, an interior Garden Room, and the World’s Smallest Reading Room – a sunny, one person niche with panoramic views and a comfortable, oversized chair. The new library also integrates RFID technology and automated material handling systems.
