Kenton Library

This project includes a 5,000 square foot renovation and 1,000 square foot addition, including replacement of the storefront system, a new streetfront canopy, and restoration of the building’s Art Deco signage mast. The library required approval from Portland’s Historic Design Review due to its location in the Kenton Commercial Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Maximizing space and flexibility was a key programming goal. For example, the 500 square foot community room’s large sliding glass doors will remain open in order for patrons to use the space on a daily basis when it is not being utilized for meetings and classes.

An existing dropped ceiling was removed to expose a vaulted roof structure creating a heightened sense of space and openness. Wood ceiling joists from the original building are being salvaged and will be reused. The exposed structure and generous amounts of wood provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere for patrons.
