TriMet South Terminus
recently awarded Portland Chapter AIA Unbuilt Merit Award, 2009
Located at a civic gateway to downtown, the design for the South Terminus of TriMet’s Portland Mall Light Rail Line integrates 100% on-site storm water disposal, renewable energy sources, salvaged materials from the old transit mall, and two prefabricated transit utility buildings into an artful, dynamic site plan. To reflect the urban scale, the two contextually-undersized utility buildings are combined in a sculptural framework clad in coil drapery, supporting a 50 KW solar panel array on the south. A granite “meter” bench in the public plaza will indicate the quantity of energy being produced by both the solar panels and the 22 vertical axis wind turbines installed on the tops of the steel poles supporting the catenary wires that power the light rail trains.
